Relax, renew, reflect…
Nestled in the leafy village of Ban Sunlomjoy, in the cool foothills of Doi Suthep is Coolwinds Cottage, a cosy traditional Lanna style teak guesthouse.
Although only 15 minutes from Chiang Mai old city, the cottage seems a tranquil world away. It is surrounded by lush vegetation, overlooks a beautiful lake and is just a short walk away from various hiking trails into the jungle.
In just a minute’s walk you can enjoy views of the two local Wat Prathat, (Doi Suthep and Doi Kham) which are both revered Buddhist mountaintop temples with chedis which it is believed enclose holy relics of the Lord Buddha. Both of these are reachable within 20 minutes by motorcycle and offer stunning views across the city.
Nearby (approx 20 mins walk) is the trendy area of Suthep, where you can while away the hours by enjoying the abundance of local coffee shops, eateries, artisan galleries and studios. You can also engage in a multitude of creative activities at the nearby Ban Klang Wat.

We are located in the quiet verdant foothills of Doi Suthep mountain, one of Chiang Mai’s most famous and most visited landmarks. Check out the two maps below to find us…
Ban Sunlomjoy
Literally meaning the “village of joy* from the winds across the ridges….“, the small hamlet of Ban Sunlomjoy at the south end of the Suthep foothills district and the surrounding area was previously a mountain.
During the planning phase for Chiang Mai airport in the 1950s, the decision was made to use the mountain to create landfill for the construction of the concrete runway and so the peak was reduced, and the land mass was moved to the airport. The local landscape was created and exists as it is to this day and is a wonderful blend of hills, tropical forest, lakes and smallholdings, all of which can be enjoyed by a casual stroll around the area. We can provide maps showing various routes, trails and attractions around the village and to help you find your way back.
The neighboring hamlets of Ban Bong Noi and Ban Sanlomjoy were developed to accommodate displaced members of ethnic groups such as Ethnic Lisu, Akha, Lahu and Yao, etc. which make up the local community today and who have lived together peacefully for over 40 years.
The lake in front of the cottage was actually a quarry, left after removing a significant amount of soil and clay for the airport construction. Scattered across the local area are several more of these ‘lakes’ now used for fishing, education and conservation projects.
* the community included the English word ‘joy’ or ‘จ อ ย’ in Thai to express the delight and happiness felt across this small community
